Goal

Advanced mechanical systems. You’re 10 weeks in — welding, wiring, and servo work are second nature now. The pneumatic neck is a new system type (compressed air) — but by now, learning new systems is just another Tuesday.

Day-by-Day Tasks

DayTaskMethodNotes
1Order pneumatic componentsFabco K-5-X cylinders x2 ($146), 12V compressor ($65), solenoid valves + fittings (~$40). Total: ~$251
1Order precision bearingsBearings Direct ~$80Replace budget bearings at high-wear points (shoulder, waist, track axles).
1-2Weld structural reinforcementSteel hubs, pivot plates, gussetsWeld reinforcement at every high-stress point: shoulder pivots, waist joint, dolly frame junction, track pod mounts.
2-3Turn shafts/pins (only parts needing a lathe)Local machine shop ($60) or buy pre-cut C-1018 rodFor shoulder pivot pins, track axle pins.
3-4Install precision bearingsPress-fit or bolt-in (depending on housing)Replace budget bearings. Smooth operation, less wear, tighter tolerances.
4Remove electric neck actuatorsUnbolt, save for other projectsList on eBay (-$25 resale).
4-5Install Fabco K-5-X pneumatic cylindersMount to neck frame, air linesTwo cylinders = head extend/retract + head tilt. The movie-accurate neck movement.
5-6Install 12V air compressor + reservoirMount in base, air lines through torsoCompressor runs on demand — builds pressure, then shuts off. Solenoid valves control each cylinder.
6Wire solenoid valves to ArduinoGPIO controlSimple on/off — Arduino opens solenoid, air extends cylinder, head goes up.
6-7Tune pneumatic neckAdjust pressure regulator, flow control valvesToo fast = scary. Too slow = unresponsive. Tune until head movement looks natural.
7Laser cut additional reinforcement panelsLaguna EX, 3/16” aluminumGussets at frame joints. Bolt or weld in place.
7RaptorX: Scan complete reinforced structureRaptorXFull-body structural scan. Compare to Week 8 scan — verify no frame deflection under load.

Skills Practiced

Pneumatic systems (new!), structural reinforcement, precision bearing installation, lathe work (or outsourcing), pressure tuning.
