Pneumatic Neck + Structure Reinforcement

Goal

Advanced mechanical systems. You’re 10 weeks in — welding, wiring, and servo work are second nature now. The pneumatic neck is a new system type (compressed air) — but by now, learning new systems is just another Tuesday.

Day-by-Day Tasks

1	Order precision bearings	Bearings Direct ~$80	Replace budget bearings at high-wear points (shoulder, waist, track axles).
1-2	Weld structural reinforcement	Steel hubs, pivot plates, gussets	Weld reinforcement at every high-stress point: shoulder pivots, waist joint, dolly frame junction, track pod mounts.
2-3	Turn shafts/pins (only parts needing a lathe)	Local machine shop ($60) or buy pre-cut C-1018 rod	For shoulder pivot pins, track axle pins.
3-4	Install precision bearings	Press-fit or bolt-in (depending on housing)	Replace budget bearings. Smooth operation, less wear, tighter tolerances.
4	Remove electric neck actuators	Unbolt, save for other projects	List on eBay (-$25 resale).
4-5	Install Fabco K-5-X pneumatic cylinders	Mount to neck frame, air lines	Two cylinders = head extend/retract + head tilt. The movie-accurate neck movement.
5-6	Install 12V air compressor + reservoir	Mount in base, air lines through torso	Compressor runs on demand — builds pressure, then shuts off. Solenoid valves control each cylinder.
6	Wire solenoid valves to Arduino	GPIO control	Simple on/off — Arduino opens solenoid, air extends cylinder, head goes up.
6-7	Tune pneumatic neck	Adjust pressure regulator, flow control valves	Too fast = scary. Too slow = unresponsive. Tune until head movement looks natural.
7	Laser cut additional reinforcement panels	Laguna EX, 3/16” aluminum	Gussets at frame joints. Bolt or weld in place.
7	RaptorX: Scan complete reinforced structure	RaptorX	Full-body structural scan. Compare to Week 8 scan — verify no frame deflection under load.
